The number and length of “Identification Tips” vary. One will likely end up with a natural history guide. Now this superb guide has been brought fully up to date with revised text and maps along with added illustrations. Finally, although it may be hard to obtain, I must mention David Gaines's "Birds of Yosemite and the East Slope", from 1992 but still largely valid, a classic which not only contains a great deal of information, but is superbly written. I had the opportunity to see the North American strain of these in San Diego and they are admittedly quite similar although the Hawaiian variety has somewhat more black on their heads.

These birds do nest at fairly high density (average of about 50 pairs per 100 acres) so habitat alteration of even a small area at high altitude can have serious repercussions for the species. There was always something eerie about those huge black sillouetes circling overhead, kind of like buzzards of the sea. It does not have colour or photos (or many pictures) so its not for identification of plants.
