Rather than providing photographs, the "Peterson Field Guides" include illustrations of each bird, with arrows pointing out interesting features. My city is not listed In the nearby observations section my town Ocala, FL is not listed and we are a big town but yet hole in the wall towns like bronson are listed. The others all have the text on the left page, the pictures on the right. Forbush, Mass., state ornithologist, has estimated that the average number of birds killed, per cat population, is about fifty.

Also, don't expect from any of these the detail and expertise found in Brad Schram's most recent edition of the Lane guide for Southern CA, which I highly recommend. We ship to most international destinations. This Chukar was walking across the side road leading to a view area on Haleakala along with about six or eight little chicks (one shown). They survived in early Hawaii on the slopes between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, largely because the plateau between the two volcanos was considered kapu (off limits).

The listing for the great northern diver in the index is to the red-throated diver page where the rarer birds are mentioned as 'confusion species'. I would recommend this book to anyone who is starting out into the world of birds! "The Birds of Iowa Field Guide" is the first and greatest source I have found to identify birds in my own Iowa backyard.
