His inaugural volume was the classic 1934 book A Field Guide to the Birds, published (as were all subsequent volumes) by the Houghton Mifflin Company. Australian bird families, glossary, bibliography, gazetteer, indexes. 580 pages. If you want your guides faster, you can change the method from standard to express during check out. It’s a vast improvement on the original guide (which I left at home!). It runs to over 370 pages and has more than 75 illustrations by Masuda Hisashi. They are a registered charity so you will be supporting both survival.org.au and an awesome wilderness school if you buy anything that way. The introductory chapters include some regional rural folktales involving birds. At 6×9 inches in size, it’s a bit large for a pocket but easily fits in a backpack for field use. Farmers also cut off a great many patches of underbrush that might just as well have been left, thus, for lack of suitable places for their homes, driving away some of their most valuable assistants.

Under the compilation of George West, some two dozen guides around Alaska wrote chapters of varying quality for the ABA guide and, in the interest of full disclosure, yes, I was one of them (two and a half chapters), but that said, it is a good and absolutely necessary resource. The look and feel of this guide will be immediately familiar to any users of past editions, especially the latest Eastern. Kaufman used photographs in his "Field Guide to Birds of North America."
